Know every details about Cellular Jail in Port Blair City, like How to get there, When to Visit, Timings and Fee Structure, etc.
One of the memorable places to visit in Andaman is the ‘Cellular Jail’, earlier known as ‘Kalapani Jail’. It’s a place with a lot of history dating back to the Indian Freedom Struggle, where Britishers used to lock our Indian Freedom Fighters. It is known as ‘Kalapani’ because the only way out was by water and it was a strenuous and impossible task to achieve.
This historic monument serves as a mute witness of the countless bloodsheds that have happened in Andaman for many decades during British rule. The chambers of the jail still echo the countless lives lost during the freedom struggle and hence should be there in the itinerary if one plans to visit Andaman. This jail used to have seven wings and now only three wings are intact.
It has 696 cells and more than 80,000 prisoners were tortured and most of them were given death sentences but a handful survived. Veer Savarkar was one of the great political prisoners who escaped the jail. Opposite Cellular Jail, Veer Savarkar park is situated in fond memory and tribute to Vinayak Damodhar Savarkar and his fellow prisoners. Hence, it’s a must-visit place to relive the glorious history of our country.
In 1963 the Govind Ballabh Pant government hospital was constructed by demolishing four wings of the Cellular Jail. The G.B Pant hospital is the largest hospital in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, it consists of 500 beds and 40 doctors on service for the welfare islanders.
