Ross Island, which is officially known as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island is one of the must visit places in Andaman. It was the first capital of Andaman and used to be the administrative headquarters of the British when they were ruling India. During those days, all operations in the mainland were supervised and strategised from this island, which even included the construction of the Cellular Jail.
Currently, Ross Island has no Civil Settlements and it is maintained by Andaman Government.
Hence, this place has a lot of historical baggage attached to it. It has an abundance of ancient ruins like Churches, Man-caves, Hospitals, Printing Press, Bakery, and so on. The whole area is mostly engulfed by peepal and serie trees which gives it an eerie vibe for the travellers taking them back in history.
While you explore this island, you might come across various herds of Peacocks, Rabbits and Spotted deers. It is advisable to not try to feed them and keep a safe distance from them. During those days, it used to be called as the ‘Paris of the East’.
